LENA Grow is an innovative, experiential approach to professional development for early childhood teachers that measures and improves child care quality by boosting interactive talk between teachers and children. It is designed to operate as a standalone program or as an element of existing professional development initiatives. Teachers receive research-based coaching coupled with evidence-based feedback on talk in their classrooms from LENA’s “talk pedometer” technology. By participating in LENA Grow, teachers learn strategies to increase interactive talk in their existing daily routines without adding another ‘to do’ to busy days, supporting focus on what matters most: that the children in their care are valued, healthy, and thriving.
Once a week, children wear a LENA device for a full day to capture the audio environment of the classroom, which is then processed into data about the amount of interactive talk each child experiences. The objective feedback provides key insights about the room and each child as part of a 3-month coaching sequence to engage the workforce, increase interactive talk, and improve school readiness. LENA programs focus on language and literacy, one of the core social determinants of health. By building a record of each child’s language development over time, LENA Grow helps to identify children who may benefit from more individual attention. The results of participating in LENA Grow are stronger relationships, increased language development, and children who are more prepared for future school success.
